What is CA-CPT?


      Students who aspire to become Chartered Accountants have to follow a strict scheme of education and training prescribed by the Institute of Chartered Accounts of India (ICAI). The first level for the same is an exam called the Common Proficiency Test (CA-CPT). The Common Proficiency Test or CPT is an entry level test for the Chartered Accountancy course. It is a test of 4 subjects i.e. Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative aptitude.The CPT examinations are conducted twice a year in June & December.The application form can be obtained and/submitted to the following offices of the Institute of Chartered Accountants-

  • Students can register for CPT after they have successfully passed class X exams
  • Registered students can appear for CPT only after they have passed their 10+2 or an equivalent examination
  • Students must ensure that they have registered 60 days prior to the first day of the month in which CPT exam takes place i.e. on or before 1st April & 1st October for CPT to be held in June & December of the same year respectively.


Exam Pattern

  • Objective type test comprising four subjects - Fundamentals of Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude
  • Test is divided in two sessions of 2-hours each
  • Negative marking of 25% marks allotted to the question for incorrect answers
  • Qualifying marks – a student has to obtain a minimum of 50 % marks in CPT to qualify for the next level

After clearing the CPT, students can join the Chartered Accountancy course. This course is divided into 2 levels-


Level 1- Integrated Professional Competence Course (9 months course form the date of registration)

Level 2- Final Course

After clearing the Professional Competence Course exam along with 100 hour of Information Technology Training (ITT) students are required to register and practice as an articled assistant for 3 years, and simultaneously register for the Final Course. After successfully completing a General Management & Communication Skills Course (GMCS) students become eligible to appear for the Final Examinations. After having cleared the CA Final exams students need to enroll as a member of ICAI in order to be designated as a Chartered Accountant.
