Tip 21: How do phrases help in fluency?

Many people who know English grammar also struggle with fluency issues. It is hard to get fluency in English if you don’t practise. One of the keys in being able to speak English fluently is to know some stock phrases.

By stock phrases we mean phrase that you have learnt by heart. These stock phrases don’t require a lot of thinking and can be pasted at a given situation when needed.

Phrases can be as simple as: How are you? Or I am good at Math.

Now see how many more sentences can be made just be these two:

Sentences from ‘How are you’ phrase-

  • How are things?
  • How are your friends?
  • How are cities in England?
  • How are your family members?
  • How are his cousins?
  • How is she?
  • How are they?
  • How is Rahul?

Sentences from ‘I am good at’-

  • I am good at communication.
  • I am good at learning new things.
  • I am good at grasping.
  • I am good at sports

Remember that when you learn two words or two phrases and use them in your language intentionally, this will add to your fluency. However, if you learn too many phrases and words but never use them, they will always be wasted.

Thus focus on using these phrases as much as possible. Maintain a diary or make a mental note of English sentences or phrases that you already know. Now see if you can make more sentences, questions based on the stock phrases.

If you hear someone use a new phrase, immediately ask him/her the meaning of it and make a mental note to use them as soon as possible.

These phrases will go a long way into increasing your fluency since you don’t have to think a lot about grammar while speaking them.
