Tip 6: How does writing help?

As part of the RWLS principle of learning English, writing plays a vital role too. However, most learners think how exactly does writing help.

It is important to understand that writing is a way of expression and unless you learn to express, you cannot speak well. Quite a lot of times, learners are aware of some basic grammar principles, yet when it comes to speaking, they fumble since they cannot remember a lot rules spontaneously.

Here’s where writing comes in.

  • Writing gives more time: Instead of speaking first, if you write down the things that you wish to say at a place or with a person, you will be prepared. As you sit down to write, you will have plenty of time to think of the possible ways of saying what you wish.
  • Writing gets your thoughts out: It is only when you decide to write down your thoughts, you really focus on thinking in English. You think of things that you wish to say and realize that you need to learn how to speak about them. The exercise of writing gets out your thoughts.
  • Writing helps you face fears: There are people who find the past perfect tense in English very difficult. Instead of trying to speak in this tense directly, you can write down say 20 sentences using it. That way, writing will help you face your fears and prepare you for a spontaneous situation.

You can start journaling your days in English. Buy a good diary and start penning down your daily routine or a memorable day etc. Get someone to correct your English and pay attention to corrections. Remember, writing in English will ultimately help you in speaking in English.
