How to Improve Your Speaking Skills

Possessing good public speaking skills is the need of the time. A college student preparing for his presentation, a candidate gearing up for group discussion and personal interview sessions, a professional who wishes to excel in his workplace etc, everyone is working hard to improve on their ability of being a good orator.

For all those who wish to improve their speaking skills it is very important for them to understand that such skills cannot be achieved overnight. To be able to become a good speaker it is very important for them to work on their listening skills, reading skills and writing skills too. Thinking that speaking fluently is just a matter of learning new words and putting the newly learnt vocabulary to use is an incorrect notion. A speaker who has a sound reading knowledge followed by good listening skills and is articulate while writing will certainly have an edge over others.

There are a few points that you should certainly keep in mind while working on your public speaking skills

  • Go through good books that will help you add on to your existing knowledge and help make speaking on the given topic easy. It has usually been observed that people often succumb to stammering or become too conscious while speaking as their subject knowledge on the topic in question is not sufficient. Therefore adequate knowledge is always a bonus.
  •  Before planning to speak on any topic prepare a rough structure of the communication flow in your mind. This will ensure that you do not go astray while speaking.
  • It is important to work on you listening skills. You need to be a good listener and must be able to control your urge to interject and respond instantly.
  • Along with your verbal communication also work on your non-verbal communication. Body postures, hand movements, facial expressions, body language etc are extremely important. The entire public speaking exercise becomes even more effective if there is strong non-verbal communication to support it.
  • If you wish to be a good public speaker, then you need to be open to feedback. Positive or negative, you must be open for honest feedback. Do not get disheartened if you get a poor feedback. Such feedback will help you work on your weak areas and also help you enhance your strong points.
  • If possible practice your presentation beforehand. It will certainly enable you to boost your confidence level each time you go for a presentation.

We hope that the next time you are expected to speak in public, you would not hesitate and will be able to effortlessly convey your thoughts.

All the best!
