What to listen to?

It is time to spice up your English listening exercise. We are here to help you identify the right kind of listening material to help you speed up your understanding of language.

It is good that you already know that listening skills are a key to help improve your overall ability to speak English fluently. But you must also understand that listening to good quality news reports, audio books etc is also very important. Only if you refer to the relevant sources, you will be able to pick up the right kind of language skills. Listening to sources with poor pronunciation, incorrect grammar usage etc can be extremely detrimental to your learning process. So here's what you can do.

  • News reports – Try listening to journalists such as Arnab Goswani on Timesnow, Barkha Dutt on NDTV 24x7, Rahul Kanwal on Headlines Today and a few good journalists on international news channels like BBC etc. Pay attention to the technique of stressing and stretching adopted by these journalists while they deal with pertinent issues. Try to read through their body language, the way they approach the topic at hand, etc.
  • Audio books – Audio books are a modern twist to the concept of traditional story telling concept. There are thousands of free audio books that are available online on websites such as  www.audiobooks.comwww.audiobooks.orgwww.booksshouldbefree.com etc. Just download these free audio books on to your mp3 players, tablets, iPhones etc to listen to them. If possible also keep the book that you are listening handy, so as to be able to go through the text simultaneously.
  • Movies – Watch good quality English movies that also have subtitles along. By good quality English movie we mean films where the spoken English is not marred by a heavy accent and is understandable. Do keep a dictionary handy for quick reference.
  • TV shows – Include channels such as Star World, Discovery, History TV etc to your daily dose of TV viewing time. Pick your favourite shows and get hooked on to them. In the process of getting entertained, you will also improve your English in no time!
