SAT Prep : Writing

The Writing section of the SAT I includesquestions on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage and an essay. It is divided mainly into two sections: SAT Essay and SAT Multiple Choice questions based on grammar.

SAT Essay

The SAT begins with a 25-minute writing task. You are given an essay and you have to write on the prompt given in a text box. It is called Assignment.

What does this section test?

The SAT essay examines your ability to develop your own opinion on a topic/issue, your ability to support your own opinion through examples and arguments and your ability to write correct English.

How can you prepare for the essay?

  • Visit the official website of www.collegeboard.org and understand the strategies and tips for effective writing.
  • Take up several topics and learn to jot down your own arguments or thoughts about the topics.
  • Practise penning down your opinion on a topic, quoting examples and reasons.
  • Follow the PREP method to write the essay: Point, Reason, Example Point. However, you may change the sequence of PREP based on the prompt given in the essay.
  • Read editorials in newspapers. Observe how authors put across their points and reasons.

SAT Grammar

There are 49 grammar questions on the SAT writing section. Grammar accounts for over two thirds of the marks on this section. Questions are of three kinds:

  • Identification of sentence errors
  • Sentence correction (improving sentences)
  • Editing in context (improving paragraphs)

What does this section test?

This section tests your ability to apply English grammar to form technically correct sentences. It measures you ability to use standard and precise English.

How can you prepare for SAT Grammar?

  • Take up as many practice questions as possible.
  • Analyze those questions and learn from your mistakes.
  • Read the theory of some basic grammar concepts like Subject-Verb Agreement, Parallelism, Tenses, Adjectives/Adverbs, Prepositions and Conjunctions, Articles etc.

The key to mastering the Writing section of the SAT is to read and observe as much English as you can.
